Lillian Russel Recipes

In the late 1800’s a young celebrated cooking student named Helen Gelb came from France and married a restaurant owner. Her art flourished and she became the most celebrated Master Chef in New York.

Everyone who was anyone ate at the off Broadway restaurant including the famous “Diamond” Jim Brady who is said to have consumed food like three men. Brady’s constant companion was the consummate American stage actress Lillian Russell and she began to collect many of the recipes.

This cookbook incorporates some fascinating historical information such as the 1890 table of measures and portions, along with the history and 300 recipes from that time period of the New York's Theater District. The Lillian Russell Cookbook  is a fascinating window into history.
